The femme to Benny Gecko's butch, Maria's elegance, charm, and coolheadedness served both herself and the Chairmen well as she made connections, closed deals, and delivered threats throughout the urban patches of the Mojave. Frustration with Benny's increasing caginess about the future of the Strip drove her to couriership -- just for a while, for a little distance and change in perspective; then she'd return to her life at her chastised lover's right hand.
